ABOUT US

At Capital Planning, We’re Passionate About Workplace Wellness

WE CARE ABOUT WELLNESS IN THE WORKPLACE, FOR YOU AND YOUR PEOPLE.

Wellness at work is more than a benefits booklet. It’s knowing your coverage fits real life, your savings plan is easy to navigate and helps you feel in control of your future, and you can talk to a real person when something changes.

That’s how we approach our work at Capital Planning: human-first support, real conversations, and long-term relationships with organizations across Canada and the people they employ.

If it’s been a while since you reviewed your benefits or group savings, you’re not alone. Plans change. People change. We’re here to listen first, then help.

Entrepreneurship Meets Values

Becoming President of Capital Planning wasn’t a straight path for Rick Harcourt, PFA CPC.  It was more of a windy road, filled with what Rick’s kids call “Dad Lore” – with four distinct careers before joining Capital Planning in 2014.

His previous venture, Harcourt Recruiting Specialists, was on Alberta Venture’s Fast Growth 50 of the fastest-growing companies in Alberta and won the national community leadership award from industry association ACSESS.

Rick was also recognized in the inaugural class of Avenue Magazine (now Edify)’s Top 40 under 40 at that time – but something struck him as odd in that profile.  It talked a lot about his achievements as a business leader.  But it missed the real reason Rick felt he was nominated – and that was his work in the community.

Because then, and now, Rick has a genetic predisposition to getting involved in things – and not generally by choice.  It was just the thing that needed doing.  President of the local ACSESS chapter and the Urban Spirits Rotary Club.  On the executive boards of the Strathcona Rotary Club, and the Synergy Network.  Coaching minor hockey and youth ultimate, and with Scouts Canada.

This mix of values – wanting to make the world a better place, while trying to support clients and their families – is the foundation of what makes Capital strong.

Humble Rural Alberta Beginnings

Randy Olson, our founder, learned a lot of great things growing up on a farm near Ardrossan, AB. He learned the value of hard work. He learned that you “eat what you grow”.

He also learned that he was allergic to hay.

He started University in accounting, but soon realized he wanted to pursue a career that felt more meaningful. He was scouted into the investment industry, and eventually founded Capital Planning.

Randy’s mix of practicality and people-first values still shows up in how we work today.

Group Benefits

Benefits should work for your people, not the other way around.

We work with organizations to analyze their plans, make recommendations on design, and advocate and negotiate on their behalf with insurance companies. This is workplace wellness in action: coverage that supports physical and mental health, plus the financial and emotional confidence that comes from knowing you’re covered and supported.

Group Registered Savings Plans (RRSP/TFSA/RRIF)

Group savings can be one of the most meaningful workplace benefits. We support group savings programs like Group RRSP, TFSA and RESP through workplace plans, with payroll deduction to make saving simple!
We support plan members directly, so your people can reach out to us for advice, support or help!

Alberta Teachers and School Board Employee Plans

As the providers of the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) Group and Alberta School Board Employees (ASBE) Group savings plans, our goal is to make these programs easier to access, easier to understand, and easier to use. We offer specialized knowledge of how pensions and workplace benefits fit together in education careers.

 Insurance Services

Insurance plans help Capital Planning members protect themselves and their families from the unexpected. Life Insurance and Critical Illness Insurance ensures that they aren’t leaving their loved ones in the lurch if the unthinkable happens.

For those working for school boards, we also manage the ATA and ASBE Group Life+ and Group Critical Illness programs.

Personalized Support for Organizations and Their People

When was the last time you spoke to a real person about your benefits?

We know that wellness in the workplace goes beyond physical health—it includes your financial security, your peace of mind, and knowing you have someone in your corner when plans change or life gets complicated. And it’s okay if it’s been a while. We’re here to listen first, then help.
